Being yourself

“To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”  William Shakespeare

Most of us spend much of our time trying had to please others, to be true to them rather than to ourselves. Sometimes the work of counselling is to learn to hear our own inner self, which is often buried underneath other people’s expectation, condemnation or disapproval; to learn to value that inner self; and to discover the truth of Shakespeare’s words: that what is right for our own self is also ultimately right for those around us.
